Holy Synod of the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch is Conculeded

The Metropolitans with His Holiness Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas, Patriarch of the Holy See of Antioch and all the East, Supreme Head of the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church, at the Holy Synod convened at St. Jacob Baradeus’ Convent in Atchaneh-Bikfaya, Lebanon, from September 10th till the 14th.

The Holy Synod, presided by His Holiness Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas, Patriarch of the Holy See of Antioch and all the East, Supreme Head of the Universal Syrian Orthodox Church in the World, convened at St. Jacob Baradeus’ Convent in Atchaneh-Bikfaya, Lebanon, from September 10th till the 14th.

The opening session started with prayers and supplications to the Lord for blessing the Holy Synod and allowing it to convene in Atchaneh, where once before the Holy Synod convened in 1971.

Present from all over the world were their Eminences, Archbishops and Bishops, of the Apostolic See of Antioch. They discussed the situation of the Church in general and the Middle East, particularly in Syria, Iraq and Lebanon, where people are experiencing difficult times. The Hierarchs prayed for peace and tranquility to dwell there for all denominations, faiths and religions. They also prayed for mercy and eternal rest for the souls of the victims who died, healing for those afflicted with wounds or infirmities and for the gathering of those who have been displaced and forced out of their homes.

The holy fathers stressed on the fact that the Middle East countries ARE our homeland that we are proud to belong to, where our Lord and God was born and raised. Our forefathers lived there from ancient times. They were the ones who established the first civilizations of the world. Today we share with our brothers and sisters the same life and destiny. We are filled with sorrow for the immense catastrophes, troubles, instabilities and violence that people face, especially loss of life and violations of human dignity, places of worship and religious, social and national institutions.

It pains the Church fathers to see what is happening in Beloved Syria, which carries our name and embraces our civilization and heritage. It likewise embraces the Apostolic See of Antioch. They prayed for stability and peace for people and institutions.

The Holy Synod feels the responsibility of all parties to stop violence, the language of weapons, killings and violations at all levels. They urge everyone to promote the dialogue of peace, which is basic for all reforms and solutions of the current crises. In this regard, they wish to affirm that the only official speaker on behalf of the Syrian Orthodox Church is the Holy Synod, headed by the Patriarch, who represents our Church and people in local, regional and international arenas throughout the world.

The Church fathers are convinced that the best service men of good conscience and good will can offer is prayer and supplications to God Almighty, to ease the difficult times peoples of this area are going through, and to bring back home the refugees and displaced families; for immigrations from our countries are a killing hemorrhage that erases our identity and threatens our existence in the land of our forefathers and destroys our authentic heritage.

The convened fathers discussed the following subjects that were on the Synod’s agenda:

The situation of the Church in the Middle East.
Our Church affairs in India.
The affairs of Our Archdioceses in the entire world.
Our role in the Ecumenical movement.
The date of celebrating the feast of Easter.
The role of laymen in the service of the Church.
Other topics.

Fathers of the Holy Synod concluded their discussions session by urging children of the church to be patient and take the Lord as their refuge, for He answers the believers’ requests. They asked all, first and foremost, to resort to words of wisdom and dialogue as a principle that leads to safety. People who work for peace deserve God’s promise: “blessed are the peace makers, for they are called the children of God”.

Holy Synod will conclude tomorrow 14the September 2013, with the Holy Qurbono – Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and Enthronement day of Holy Father.

البيان الختامي الصادر عن المجمع الأنطاكي السرياني الأرثوذكسي المقدّس

بدعوة مباركة من قداسة سيدنا البطريرك مار إغناطيوس زكا الأول عيواص، إلتأم المجمع المقدّس للكنيسة السريانية الأرثوذكسية برئاسة قداسته ورعايته. بدأ المجمع أعماله بترتيب وإقرار جدول الأعمال المكوّن من المواد التالية: الكرسي الرسولي الأنطاكي، موضوع خطف المطرانين يوحنا ابراهيم وبولس يازجي، مؤتمر الرهبان والأديرة السريانية، وضع المسيحيين في الشرق الأوسط، شؤون الأبرشيات السريانية الأرثوذكسية، شؤون الكنيسة في الهند، تنمية الجانب الروحي والإداري للإكليروس، الليتورجيا والأسرار والطقوس، والشؤون المتعلّقة بالأصوام والصلوات والقداديس، الزيّ الكهنوتي، التقليد الكنسي، التأديبات الكنسية، الحركة المسكونية وشؤون أخرى. فعالجوا هذه المواضيع وأمحصوها فحصاً وتدقيقاً وأبدوا الآراء وقدّموا الملاحظات والاقتراحات حيث بحثوا كلّ موضوع على حدة.

أمّا بخصوص وضع الكرسي الرسولي الأنطاكي فقرّر الآباء وأكّدوا إنّ أنطاكية هي عاصمة سوريا التاريخية وفيها أسّس مار بطرس الرسول كرسيّه الرسولي واليوم عاصمة سوريا هي دمشق وقد قرّر الآباء بالإجماع أن تبقى دمشق العاصمة الروحية للكنيسة السريانية الأرثوذكسية محافظين على التقليد الرسولي وأصرّوا ألا ينقل الكرسي من دمشق تحت أي ظرف.

أمّا قضية المطرانين المخطوفين مار يوحنا ابراهيم ومار بولس يازجي فدرس الآباء ظروف الخطف والجهود المبذولة من أجل عودة المطرانين بسلام إذ لم تعلن حتى اليوم أي مجموعة مسؤوليتها عن الخطف وتناشد الكنيسة أصحاب الضمائر الحيّة من رجال الدين والمسؤولين والساعين إلى السلام من دول وحكومات ومؤسسات إنسانية أن يتابعوا اتصالاتهم من أجل فكّ أسر هذين المطرانين الجليلين.

أمّا عن مؤتمر الرهبان والأديرة السريانية فقد رحّب آباء المجمع المقدّس بنتائج المؤتمر الذي عُقِد برئاسة قداسته ما بين 26 إلى 30 آب الماضي وكانت الانطباعات التي حملها الإخوة الرهبان مدعاة فرح لدى الجميع.
أمّا وضع المسيحيين في الشرق الأوسط فكان مدعاة أسف وحزن على ما يجري في المنطقة لا سيما أعمال الاضطهاد والإرهاب والتعدّي والقتل والدمار والتهجير والشهادة والموت بحقّ المواطنين عامة والمسيحيين خاصة حيث دُمِّرت كنائسُهم وأديرتُهم وهُدِمَت مؤسساتهم وتشرّدت عائلاتهم وهُجِّروا من أرض آبائهم وأجدادهم وانتُهِكَت أعراضهم وأُكرِهوا على تبديل دينهم وهم أبرياء في تحمّل هذه المآسي والتعديات واستُشهِد منهم كثيرون طالبين لهم الرحمة ومقدّمين التعزيات لذويهم. وهنا أيضاً يناشد آباء المجمع المقدّس المجتمع الدولي والقوى العالمية الكبرى وأصحاب الضمائر الحيّة والإرادات الحسنة أن يقفوا إلى جانب الخير ويسعوا إلى إنقاذ المنطقة من النكبات والمصائب والكوارث التي قد تنتقل إلى أجزاء أخرى من العالم مطالبين أبناء الكنيسة أن يتحلّوا بمزيد من الصبر والمثابرة على الصلاة رغم كل التضحيات التي قدّموها بل فُرِضت عليهم قسراً في سبيل أن يحافظوا على تاريخهم وتراثهم وإيمانهم وعقيدتهم ولغتهم السريانية المقدّسة لغة السيّد المسيح بل لغة سوريا القديمة. ويشكر آباء المجمع أبناء الكنيسة في كلّ الأبرشيات والمؤسسات المسيحية والإنسانية لما قدّموا ويقدّمون من مساعدات للمحتاجين والمهجّرين والمشرّدين في كلّ مكان.

وعليه عيّن المجمع المقدّس لجنة لدرس ومتابعة أحوال ومستقبل أبناء الكنيسة في الشرق قوامها مطارنة سوريا ولبنان وبعض العلمانيين ذوي الاختصاص والخبرة.

وفي شؤون الأبرشيات السريانية، درس الآباء ظروف كلّ أبرشيّة بحسب التقارير المقدّمة من أصحاب النيافة المطارنة وأبدوا الملاحظات الضرورية لإجراء كلّ ما هو في صالح هذه الأبرشيات. أمّا عن شؤون الكنيسة في الهند فقد شرح قداسته ظروف الكنيسة هناك وقدّم صاحب النيافة السكرتير البطريركي لشؤون الهند تقريراً عن وضع الكنيسة هناك. ثم تطرّق الآباء إلى موضوع تنمية الجانب الروحي للإكليروس فحثّوا الكهنة على تطوير بناء حياتهم الروحية والليتورجية بالصوم والصلاة والتأمّل والقدوة الحسنة ودراسة الكتاب المقدّس والطقوس وما إلى ذلك في سبيل أن ينقلوا رسالة الإيمان بالطريقة الفُضلى من خلال الإرشاد والوعظ والتعليم من أجل خلاص نفوسهم وأبناء رعيّتهم.

وأكّد الآباء على التمسّك بتعاليم الكتاب المقدّس بعهديه والتقليد الرسولي وما درج عليه الآباء من صدر المسيحية حتى اليوم. وبحث المجمع المقدّس شؤوناً أخرى لتدبير الكنيسة ورعايتها، متمنّين للمنطقة أمناً وسلاماً واستقراراً ولحكامها ومسؤوليها حكمة لما فيه خير المواطنين كلّ المواطنين. وختم آباء المجمع المقدّس اجتماعهم بالصلاة من أجل استقرار المنطقة وخاصّة سوريا ولبنان وكلّ بلاد الشرق الأوسط التي تعاني من هذه الأزمات.
